Google Replaces PPC Ads with Google Plus Content for Selected Queries

Last evening, Danny Sullivan of Search Engine Land reported that Google is now highlighting “Latest Posts” from Google+ pages and profiles in the search results. Until this update went live, the Google+ Direct Connect feature had displayed recent Google+ posts directly below a brand’s “normal” links. Now, Google is testing a reorganized search results page that displays recent Google+ activity on the on the right-hand side where PPC ads are typically displayed.

Are search engine result figures accurate?

The first lesson of search engine accuracy is that the number of results you’ll get depends on the computer you’re using and which copy of Google you’re using. There are several copies of Google in the world, and your search query will be dispatched to whichever version is the least busy.

The results will also be personalised, according to what you’ve searched for previously and where you’re based.

It’s also worth mentioning that I searched for myself and got 68 million web page results.

I’ve written no books, starred in no films, and you’ve probably never heard of me. And yet I’m massive on the web.

Lay off the Social Media Experts | Betabeat — News, gossip and intel from Silicon Alley 2.0.

stryker:  I mean “lay off” as in “lay off, man, quit harshing my gig” and not “fire.” It’s a double entendre, designed to rope in the skeptical reader. Wink wink.

I wonder, actually, if this whole “social media experts are dumb” thing is some sort of tech cultural self resentment complex. It’s a thing I do, and it’s easy for me, so it’s worthless and anyone that does that for a living is dumb or evil.

But you know what? Love yourself! That thing you know, it’s really hard! It really is! It’s a skill. There are people that don’t have it. It’s okay to be good at it!

I think the issue is with the Porn-Star-like job-title dichotomy. Can there just be social media professionals with various levels of knowledge, or does every single person in the field need to be a self-proclaimed Expert?

But no one really calls themselves an expert, though, do they? I mean I’m sure someone does, but I can’t recall ever seeing it in a title or on a business card. It’s more of a subversive pejorative than an actual title, no?

I’ve always preferred “sexpert.”

Tabar Adventure: BuzzFeed Adds A Little Nostalgia To Your Facebook Timeline

tabaradventure:

Facebook’s Timeline is a cool idea, but as a representation of my life, it doesn’t have much to say about my experiences before 2004. Now, in its own small way, viral content site BuzzFeed is trying to change that. Specifically, it’s adding buttons to select posts that take advantage of the…

“Search Plus Your World” Google Result personalization, Answer to Facebook & Twitter

Google Update

Twitter criticizes Google’s Google-centric approach update in the statement: “For years, people have relied on Google to deliver the most relevant results anytime they wanted to find something on the Internet.

Often, they want to know more about world events and breaking news. Twitter has emerged as a vital source of this real-time information, with more than 100 million users sending 250 million Tweets every day on virtually every topic. As we’ve seen time and time again, news breaks first on Twitter; as a result, Twitter accounts and Tweets are often the most relevant results.

We’re concerned that as a result of Google’s changes, finding this information will be much harder for everyone. We think that’s bad for people, publishers, news organizations and Twitter users.”

Google Clarifies We are a bit surprised by Twitter’s comments about Search plus Your World, because they chose not to renew their agreement with us last summer (http://goo.gl/chKwi

), and since then we have observed their rel=nofollow instructions.
